  12th House Planets Revisited

Twelfth House Planets usually possess a decidedly "behind the scenes" flavor when compared to the normal planetary energies.  As discussed in a previous article,  Twelfth House Planets -- Liberating the Subdued Energies , this represents one of the challenges for the astrologer.  Somehow, we need to recognize and search for a mechanism to release this pent-up energy.

I often see a parallel between 12th House Planets and the retrograde condition of the particular planet.  For example, Venus (the planet of social expression) in the 12th feels almost indistinguishable from a natal Venus Rx.  In both cases the avenues of social expression are subdued or suppressed.

It is particularly interesting to consider cases where the Moon or the Sun are in the 12th House. Since neither the Sun or Moon ever actually goes Retrograde, how does the concept presented in the last paragraph hold up?

We must temporarily suspend reality as we use this theory.  The Sun and Moon are so very important in the overall interpretation of the Horoscope.  But when one (or both) of this dynamic duo are sequestered in the 12th, major components of individual expression are challenged.  It is as if the Rx phenomenon of repressed expression (easily remembered as Rx -- R(epressed) E(x)pression) assumes its powerful control over the Planet.

If we may return to the Venus in the 12th example for a moment, consider the feeling we'd get with a Horoscope with Venus in the 12th and also retrograde natally.  The oppressive feeling of social restraint or feeling disconnected synergistically becomes an even more challenging avenue of expression.  It may, in fact, be easier just to stay at home rather than make the effort to get out and socialize.

So when we have a 12th House Planet also retrograde natally, it's like a double-whammy of suppression/repression and is an important factor to consider as we synthesize the Horoscope.  Plus, we must consider the placement by Sign and any aspects to the Planet in the 12th as we evaluate its overall impact.  Just imagine if the 12th House Venus Retrograde was in Virgo and in difficult aspect to Saturn Rx!  It isn't much of a stretch to explore how the Father's influence (or absence) may have reinforced the social challenges by being overly critical or creating unattainable expectations...

In future articles, we'll look at some specific examples of how these 12th House Planets impact the Horoscope.
