Counseling Pluto Transits
to the
Natal Moon

"Change
is the constant, the signal for rebirth,
the egg of the phoenix"

One of the more challenging
situations in the consultation occurs when there is a major current or
upcoming measurement that must be addressed. Obviously, we must honestly
inform and prepare the client for the possibilities. Equally important is
our delivery of this information so as not to unnecessarily alarm or
disturb the client.
One of the difficult situations that comes to mind is a
Transit or Solar Arc of Pluto. Our experience guides us toward the likely
manifestations, but as always we must keep in mind the probable polarities
of experience that we expect.
I use the "funnel concept" to make sense of
the measurement in the context of the client's life. Beginning with
a relatively broad expectation for the specific measurement, we can then
start to narrow down the possibilities to yield more specific
probabilities. The interactive format of the consultation allows us to
define and refine these expectations. Astrology helps determine what
questions to ask.
In the example of a Pluto Transit (or Solar Arc) to
the Natal Moon, we begin with a broad, relatively universal
interpretation that incorporates the involved planetary energies. We know
that Pluto suggests a necessary inevitable change that will likely
encompass empowerment, a new perspective, and a transformation of sorts.
Typically, the "Phoenix Principle" is involved, where something
must fall away, be sacrificed, or surrendered in order for growth and
evolution to continue. This may include beliefs, behaviors, belongings, or
relationships.
Since the Transiting or Solar Arc planet exerts its
influence on the Natal Planet, in this example we would expect Pluto's
dramatic changes to be focused on emotional needs or nurture, as
represented by the Natal Moon. We arrive at the logical suggestion of a
necessary, inevitable change in the client's emotional perspective, etc.
While this can obviously manifest quite differently, two specific
situations are described below:
 |
One question that I ask when I see this measurement
is, "Is there someone close to you—most likely
female—that is currently experiencing a serious health
challenge?" If the client answers affirmatively, we need more
information. Death typically shows up in the chart of someone close to
person who dies rather than the chart of the individual who dies.
(Please refer to the brief article Can Astrology Predict Death
in the non-technical archives of this site). |
If a relative is indeed seriously ill,
this gives us the opportunity to ask, "What do you feel that needs
to be communicated to this individual?" This can gently, yet firmly
encourage the client to say what needs to be said, often involving (and
sometimes resolving) long-standing tensions, misunderstandings, or
unresolved issues.
We must remember that when death
occurs around us, there is usually a corresponding "wake-up
call"; a new perspective regarding our own mortality.
 |
Another instructive manifestation of
Pluto Transit Moon is a dramatic new perspective in relationships. One
way this may show up is through the end of a relationship,
particularly a divorce. A divorce requires the individual to
let go of many emotions (the Moon) and to experience a shift in
emotional perspective. The use of the Phoenix principle may prove
comforting, symbolically emerging reborn from the ashes of what once
was. |
Because children are often impacted by
divorce, as suggested by the nurturing maternal symbolism of the Natal
Moon. One is forced to see a new perspective on the relationship with
the children as well as the ex-husband/wife.
The end of a relationship is never
easy to assimilate, but it may be helpful, once again, to incorporate
the Phoenix Principle into the consultation. Astrological influences
encourage (or demand) that the slate be wiped clean, laying the
groundwork for a new beginning.
Please keep in mind that these are but
two of the possibilities for this measurement. Others might include
a child leaving home (empty nest syndrome), a major shift in emotional
responsibility, etc.
When experiencing a Pluto Transit/Solar
Arc, it is commonly uncomfortable, unpleasant, or even downright painful.
Also, due to the slow movement of Pluto, transits typically persist for a
long time. After the effect has subsided, it is interesting how the
client relates something like, "That was really painful, but it
definitely needed to happen." or, "I was miserable during that
time, but I've come away stronger and more optimistic."
The long-lasting effects of Pluto
Transits may seem endless to the person experiencing them first-hand. It
is critically helpful to clearly explain the expected duration of the
influence and reinforce that this is a temporary, albeit lengthy
influence.
