Saturn in the Natal Chart --
Necessary Controls or
Too Much Restriction?

As an exercise in some of my intermediate and advanced workshops, I have students choose the least favorite part of their natal chart.  Quite often their choice is Saturn.  Many of us would just as soon get out the "White Out®" and permanently erase that sucker from our chart.  After all, who needs all that restraint, restriction, and control?  Well actually, we all do.

Long receiving what I'd consider a "bad rep" astrologically, Saturn often can rein in other parts of the natal chart that otherwise might run roughshod over the entire Horoscope leaving us much the worse for wear.  Let me offer a couple of examples.

bullet

Consider the case of a hyperactive Jupiter (the subject of last month's article).  An unrestrained Jupiter may at times just be too optimistic, unrealistic, or otherwise dangerously reckless.  Imagine the potential for excessive behavior if these impulses were to remain completely unchecked.

But add Saturn to the mix and we'll often get a "Wait just a minute now.  Let's look at this before we get ourselves into some serious trouble" attitude.  In a way it's as important as having emergency brakes on a runaway train.  Particularly if Saturn aspects Jupiter the two can reasonably work together without either always having the upper hand.

Another situation where Saturn often proves helpful is in a chart that has little or no Earth emphasis.  When Earth is conspicuously under-represented, there is often a lack of "grounding".  Saturn can often be used to add a degree of realism, adding stability to an otherwise inadequately anchored Horoscope.

Other positive Saturnian traits include determination, discipline, perseverance, structure, and building a solid foundation.  So the old boy is really not such a villain after all.  It's all in how we use it in the synthesis of the entire chart.

I'd suggest that you not be too quick to expel Saturn from your Natal Chart.  If you really get to know the effects of this ringed planet, you might just find that it can offer you just what you need.  In fact you may eventually find it almost impossible to get along without it.
