Do You Really Want to be "Normal"?

"Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal."

~ Albert Camus

"To be normal is the ideal aim of the unsuccessful"

~ Carl Jung

"Remember as far as anyone knows, we're a nice normal family."

~ Homer Simpson

"Normal" is a strange word. It's something that most of us think we want to be. It's the loosely-defined and relatively acceptable middle ground between two extremes of behavior. It's a subjective term that we use as a benchmark when we think we're too ______ (fill in the blank with the appropriate word).

In the following table, columns A and B represent examples of opposites in behavioral traits.

Column A Column B
introverted gregarious
intense passive
passionate reserved
eccentric traditional
serious superficial
spontaneous predictable
indecisive inflexible
apathetic opinionated
unmotivated ambitious
independent dependent
sensitive unemotional
rebellious rigid
logical emotional

As a test for normalcy, choose the term in each row that you feel best represents you. Give yourself 3 points for each answer from Column A and 5 points for each answer from Column B. After you've totaled your points, click here to interpret your score. (No fair looking ahead!)
