The Responsibility of the Astrologer

As discussed in this month's Non-Technical Article, Responsibility is doubtless a very desirable character trait.  However, being an astrologer carries with it some very special and rather unique responsibilities.

Clients routinely seek out astrologers for insight, self-understanding, and an objective viewpoint into their individual situation and possibilities.  It is important that the astrologer be able to provide this objective assistance, helping the client prepare a meaningful strategy for the future.

Above all, the astrologer is obliged to be completely truthful.  If any cautionary statements are indicated it is our responsibility to tactfully communicate these cautions.  On the other hand, if the client comes to us with ideas that we are unable to confirm as astrologically possible or probable, we must communicate that as well.  It does the client little good -- and sometimes great damage -- to tell them just what they want to hear.  Sure, we'd love to be able to tell every client that they're going to win the lottery, find the love of their life, etc.  This may be one of the more difficult things for the astrologer to do.  We must make it crystal clear how the anticipated astrological influences may play out in the context of their lives, but that nothing is guaranteed.  So much depends on personal goals, motivation, and commitment.

Personally, I try not to advise clients, instead finding it preferable to help them gain a more objective perspective and then make their own well thought out decisions.  While some clients would rather be told what they should do, it's neither our responsibility nor is it responsible for us to tell them precisely what to do.  It is crucial to fully involve the client in decisions that will impact his or her life.  Perhaps I'm in the minority, but most of my clients understand and embrace this approach and recognize that they must ultimately take responsibility for their own actions and decisions.

It is our responsibility as astrologers to apply our astrological insight as it pertains to the individual's life rather than attempting to squeeze them into a pre-formed mold that's been created for them.  The considerable latitude of expression suggested by a particular astrological measurement means something different for each individual experiencing it.  One size definitely doesn't fit all.

The responsibilities are many, but the potential benefits are virtually unlimited.  Astrology is much too powerful a tool to be taken lightly.  We must treat it and our clients with the respect that is deserved.
