Good question! Some people may
feel that after receiving a prediction one would be predisposed for the
actual event to occur. And I would often wholeheartedly agree!
Please read on...
But the question asked if the possibilities
were limited by the prediction. This is a very different
question and deserves some explanation.
The responsible use of astrology allows
us to predict (actually, I prefer the words anticipate or forecast)
occurrences that are within the likely realm of probability. If
you're not new to my Web site you'll know that I focus a lot of attention
on polarities -- the relatively wide range of possible
responses to or manifestations of a particular measurement.
Each of the multitude of individual
measurements has a fairly narrow range of anticipated effects varying from
extremely positive to not at all positive. This whole spectrum of
manifestation still occurs within our initial expectations
— but this is
where the individual's free will comes into play. Our conscious
decisions, our level of motivation, and our environment or external
factors all combine to determine what will actually happen in our lives.
For example, if there were a stressful
measurement between Sun and Neptune in the Birth Chart, it suggests fairly
specific tendencies. But within these expectations there is a
considerable latitude of expression
— all of which still remain
consistent with the specific measurement.
This example would lead us to expect
— at the extremes
— self-deception, the need to escape, or unclear
self-image on the less positive side contrasted to spiritual enlightenment
or connectedness on the most positive side. Given these choices, I'm
sure we would all choose the spiritual enlightenment. In reality,
often what we observe is somewhere in the middle ground rather than the
absolute extremes of anticipated expectations. (For further
discussion of this particular measurement, please see this month's
Astrology Article, Escapism: How
to recognize it in the natal chart)
Although this example is oversimplified
to make my point, I believe that the point is nonetheless quite valid.
By being aware of our overall
potential
— as suggested by the strengths and challenges in our
horoscope and the most positive manifestations thereof
— we can more
readily envision ourselves striving for and attaining these more positive
aspirations.
If someone has experienced only the less
satisfying or more frustrating manifestations of a particular measurement,
he or she may feel locked in or doomed to endure this same influence
throughout their entire life. It is important to understand that
this is not the case. Fortunately, astrology has moved beyond the
pre-destiny and inflexibility of such doom-and-gloom predictions.
It's never too late to change how we use all our tools.
Further, there are also times when it is
important to be aware of some potential challenges or pitfalls as well as
the more positive potentials. The awareness of what might happen unless
we take an active role in our own development can prove to be a
powerful motivator, helping us to accomplish the more positive outcome.
I'm a firm believer that the more detail
and structure we can give our dreams and visions for the future, the more
likely they are to actually occur. If we expect the worst, we often
get it. It's the old, "Be careful what you wish for..."
saying. But, on the other hand, if we allow and encourage ourselves
to believe that a desirable outcome is realistic, it then becomes
infinitely more attainable.
So in answer to the initial question,
"Don't predictions limit possibilities?" I would
have to answer a resounding, "No!" Working with a
qualified astrologer, you should better comprehend your own individual
strengths and challenges and how to best balance and integrate them.
As a result, the forecast or anticipated outcome is an enhanced
possibility, and a highly beneficial one. Then, being
predisposed for this positive outcome to occur is terrific!
